We are a statewide, nonprofit organization representing 27 municipal harbor management commissions, state harbormasters, and others concerned with Connecticut’s harbors and marine resources.
How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
The Connecticut Harbor Management Association (CHMA) was established to provide a forum for information exchange among local Harbor Management Commissions that have a city and state-approved Harbor Management Plan (HMP). The State of Connecticut authorizes municipal harbor management commissions to manage their ports and harbors in the public interest and to review State permits and certificates for the expressed purpose of determining consistency with their HMP. All management practices are conducted in accordance with the legislative intent of the Connecticut Harbor Management Act of 1984 (P.A. 84-287).
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
The mission of the CHMA is to share information and to provide a forum to facilitate coordination among individuals responsible for managing Connecticut’s ports and harbors.

Who owns your company or runs daily operations?
The CHMA is governed by 11 board members nominated from members of local harbor commissions with a State-approved harbor management plan. John Thomas Pinto (Norwalk Harbor Management Commisson) is president; Louis Allyn (Mystic Harbor Management Commission) Secretary/treasurer. Associate membership on the Board is held by Geoffrey Steadman who is also the Coastal Management Consultant for the Association. Michael Griffin, State of Connecticut Harbor Master for Norwalk, is Chairman of the Harbor Master Focus Group.
